We rarely encounter a “new” school that already knows exactly who we are. But down the road from Romchek – one of our long-standing partner schools in remote, rural Preah Vihear – something remarkable has been happening.
For years, students from the village of TaBra haven’t been waiting for the future to come to them. By Grade 5, many of these determined young learners were already making the long trek to Romchek Primary, hoping to enter the PLF system early. They had heard whispers of the pathway: the transition to Srayang High School, the resources of the Learning Center, and the life-changing potential of scholarships.
They didn’t wait for an invitation. They made the walk, asked the questions, and looked for a way in.
Today, we are meeting that determination halfway.
Removing the Barriers to Entry
Tiny TaBra Primary runs to Grade 6 and holds just around 50 kids – a number that has been dwindling as students either set out for Romchek, or dropped out due to the lack of future educational opportunities.
By bringing TaBra school into the PLF network, we are changing that. Now, we will offer all graduating Grade 6 students at TaBra the opportunity to sit our Srayang Learning Center entrance exam without having to transition via Romchek. For the first time, these children can stay within their own community while securing a clear, supported future in secondary education.
Building the Foundation: Health & Infrastructure
To support this academic ambition, we are starting with practical, foundational upgrades designed to keep students healthy, present, and ready to learn.
-
A New School Kitchen: Hungry children cannot learn. While the World Food Program (WFP) supports breakfast programs in the region, approval is contingent on having a functioning on-site kitchen which TaBra doesn’t currently have. By building this facility, on the same model that serves Romchek school, we ensure that TaBra is eligible for essential nutritional support.
-
A Water Tower: We are upgrading TaBra’s current water situation with a new tower, providing a reliable source of clean, safe drinking water on-site.
-
Handwashing Stations: Simple but essential hygiene infrastructure to reduce illness and improve daily attendance.
-
Essential Supplies: Every student at TaBra is being equipped with the basics—new backpacks and school supplies—to ensure they have the tools to succeed from day one.
Meeting Eagerness with Opportunity
What moves us most about TaBra is not just the level of need, but the level of eagerness.
Seeing primary-aged children dream beyond Grade 6 and advocate for their own education is a powerful reminder of why we do this work. They are already walking the miles; our job is simply to make that walk a little easier and the destination a lot more certain.
By strengthening TaBra Primary now, we aren’t just improving a building – we are laying the foundation for a new generation of scholars and leaders in Cambodia.
Welcome to the pathway, TaBra. We can’t wait to see how far you’ll go!
Want to walk alongside PLF students in their journey but not sure how?
Ways to join our mission:
For as little as $10 a month, you could contribute to the ongoing education of our students. $120 goes a long way in Cambodia: that’s 5 village children on the road to education, with access to school and clean drinking water for half a year. Or a million other things, all of which coalesce into the tools needed for life to change for the better!
