Chamnab – IT Teacher, Srayang Learning Center

I became a PLF student when I was in middle school in Srayang. At that time, I was living in a small house with my sister near the school. My father brought us to Srayang like that so we could continue in education, because there was no secondary school near our village. He told me that when he was young, he really loved education and really wanted to study, but he could only finish Grade 7. He wanted to ensure we could continue in school.

So we lived in that small house by ourselves, me and my sister. We also really loved school. But we didn’t have much food and used to eat omelets every day. We lived like that for maybe 6 months.

At Srayang school we met PLF students who were staying in the dorm. They used to bring us food because they felt sorry for us. My father heard about PLF and asked them if we could join, and I was very happy to become a PLF student! That made such a big difference to us, and my family could save some money. We made more friends and felt like we had more people around us.

The best thing at the dorm was English class. Because until that point, I didn’t know any English. But with those classes, it started to become more clear and I could understand much better. It’s also the first time I saw a computer. I was so excited and when I started to study computers, I learned very quickly.

When I finished Grade 9, PLF brought me to study at high school in Siem Reap and stay in the dorm there. It was very good for me, but at the beginning I couldn’t cross the road. I got a bit lost on the way back to the dorm.

I chose IT for my degree because the more I studied computers, the more I loved it. IT has a lot of things I can learn from. I never feel bored with computers and I like to create something new related to technology.

Now my sister and I finished University and nearly 10 years later I am back at Srayang as an IT teacher, which is now the Learning Center.

My father is so happy that we could complete our education. He is so proud.

The thing I like most about my job is that when the students ask a question, it means they aren’t scared of me. Even if their question is outside of the lesson, I’m happy to answer and I still can improve my teaching skill because when I can’t answer their question I can do more research to help them. So I am learning new things from the questions they ask. I am also teaching the SLC staff how to use Google Docs and I really enjoy that.

Education is very important because if we don’t go to school, we can’t see the new world. It is a step that brings you closer to your future goal and we can earn more money by using our knowledge.

I want to suggest to the young learner, please keep going to school because education can change your life. It’s not only your benefit but your family and community too. You are the one who can develop your community. If we have more educated people our country will easily develop. It’s the power that will make our country strong.”
