Have a look at some updates on Sopha’s post about his recreations of famous still life art.
UPDATE May 19, 2013 (by Lori Carlson)
Sopha has been continuing his work recreating his favorite still life pieces, using more Cambodian-centric items. Have a look at his “Sunflowers” addition:
“Vincent Van Gogh is the sad artist in the world. For this blog post I decided to choose ‘Sunflowers’ by Vincent Van Gogh because I like his use of yellow and the shapes of the flowers. Also I saw this painting in the Seven Candles guest house where I take computer classes in the Ponheary Ly Foundation Lab. When I researched the painting and Van Gogh, I learned that it is a very famous still life and he made it in the Impressionist style. The Impressionists used small paint brushes to show the real life of everyday. So I like him and I follow him to recreate this still life.
In his painting he uses Sunflowers. He chose to use sunflowers because there were many sunflowers in France where he painted. However, in my village there are no sunflowers. So I tried to recreate his famous painting with lotus flowers because Cambodia has a lot of lotus flowers.”
Sopha has also been experimenting with website development. Here is a screen capture of the page he is working on.

Here I show these photos as translations of still life paintings by famous artists, how I see them in Cambodia. I chose these still life paintings because all of them have lemons which are like the limes my family grows on our land. So, I decided to use our limes to recreate the artwork of these famous painters.

Sopha is a 15 years old living near Siem Reap, Cambodia. He has studied technology and media with the Ponheary Ly Foundation since 2008, and began taking PLF sponsored Global Citizen Media classes in 2011. He enjoys programming, photography and filmmaking. He has completed four videos since 2011. His award winning videos “Water Wells in My Village” and “I am One” gained him international recognition. “I Am One” won Sopha and his team a $10,000 grant in the Goodtube.org competition. Sopha continues to study media and makes videos for NGOs working in the Siem Reap area. In the future, he would like to be a manager and photographer.
My favorite is “Still Life with Lemon by Lucian Freud”. I think you should do more of these and maybe make some still life of your own as well, because it’s a very interesting project.
Have you considered re-staging famous paintings and photographing them?

Very artistic Sopha. Good work~!
thank you lori correct my mistake,
PS if you want to mention your films in your bio, you should make them clickable links in case any reader would like to see it.
Very interesting project, Sopha. My favorite is “Branch of Lemon”. I’d like to see more of these.
Thank you that is my favorite too. I will post a new still life that is my favorite just this week.
A creative transformation of well known art, infused with Cambodian flair! I love it 🙂
Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists! I like your version of flowers very much. The flowers look happy and sad both at the same time. And the picture has a very soothing combination of colors.
The comparison between Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and and your Lotuses is excellent. I love your vase choice and the colors against the blue-grey wall.
Thank you for your comment. I am very proud of my self that I can do this project. when I try to make this photo I found a lot of places have blue background, But those places not work. Finally it worked in front of the board.
