SORORN – Welfare Administration

“I am from Khnar Sanday commune, and became a PLF student while at Knar Primary School in 2006. PLF helped me a lot, with study materials and scholarships.

As soon as I finished Grade 12, I immediately thought with my family that if I did not get a scholarship, I would not continue my studies at the university, but would have to find a job because I could not afford to pay the tuition. So without PLF help, I would not have had the opportunity to reach my dream, to continue my studies in Phnom Penh, especially the Royal University of Law and Economics, which is the number one law school in the country.

I chose Law because this subject really interest me. And after university I began to work as a lawyer’s assistant and learn a lot of work related to the court. But when Covid came, my job was terminated immediately because legal cases suspended.

During that time, I went through a lot of private work, and did a lot of night shifts as receptionist at a hotel, a call center in a transport company, and a cashier in a mart. I was very active to find work. I communicate through friends, through workshops & seminars, through job fairs and social media.

This is how I knew about my current job, at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) in Phnom Penh. I had to sit an entrance exam as well as pass the interview, and I was successful. And now I really love this work because it benefits workers and ordinary people, and ensures equality when going to the hospital. So I am happy because I feel my job is useful and I can be a part of the community and help promote the health of the people.

I think I have become a role model for the next generation of young people who strive to continue their education until they successfully complete their bachelor’s degree and have a decent job.

My advice to younger students, do not drop out of school, because you can all become the people that society needs for the future. And when looking for good employment, try to follow all the information related to the job as much as possible and try to sharpen your abilities to be able to compete in the job market.

For me, education means a lot, because a society that can grow depends on young people who are full of creative ideas and can work to create their long-term vision, that’s why we need education.”

There are many more students just like Sororn, with great academic promise for higher education, but lacking the financial ability to get there.

Donating to our scholarship fund ensures they can access college, and go on to employment opportunities that change the trajectory of not only their lives, but their families’ and communities’ too.

Make their dreams come true – and contribute to a brighter and more equitable Cambodia!
