SOPHA – Civil Engineering

Sopha came up through our project at Chey since 2006 and graduated university last year. He has always been a very proactive student and an active member of our mentorship program, beginning as early as his middle school years when – along with friends Sothy, SamOun and Sen – he volunteered to assist with the first computer classes at Chey. His love of technology developed into choosing a very specialized major – Water Resources and Infrastructure Engineering – at the Institute of Technology, the top technological college in Cambodia. He gained invaluable and varied internships during university that have now led him to working on some of the biggest infrastructure projects currently going on in Cambodia.

“I chose to study this major because it’s the most unique course which relates to hydraulic construction and infrastructure works which I am passionate about. Moreover, this major is the most important key to develop the country. Currently, I am Survey Engineer, and my job helps me and my family so much. Also for my community too, I can be the role model for children in the village to motivate them. Because I could only get to this today from working and study nonstop, and from challenge myself to succeed. For my future goal I want to startup a company for Survey work with LiDAR technology in Cambodia.
PLF was a huge assistance to me when I was a student and supported me with materials and classes. The best thing they provided was guidance from seniors to develop ideas for university majors, and classes in soft skills and critical thinking. During college, PLF organized meetings where all of us may come together, get to know one another, and share expertise and information.
For me, mentorship is the best for young students to start to dream and imagine their future. I am one of them who could reach to this day because of mentorship from PLF back when I was younger. Now it is a pleasure for me, sharing my tips or my challenge to our next generation. My advice to young students is “NONSTOP YOUR DREAMING” if you want to reach your goal. You had better go to school and you will figure it out step by step and you’ll see the difference from your old day to today.
The last thing you should never forget from PLF slogan is “School is the answer”. Education is the most powerful treasure for me which I have and will never lose. It made my life better day by day because of qualification of my knowledge. Learning allows me to understand the world around me and where I could fit. It helps me to find new ideas that I could use to improve my country, my community and myself. If we continue to learn, we make new connections, increase our marketable skills, and understand people better.”

There are many more students just like Sopha, with great academic promise for higher education, but lacking the financial ability to get there.

Donating to our scholarship fund ensures they can access college, and go on to employment opportunities that change the trajectory of not only their lives, but their families’ and communities’ too.

Make their dreams come true – and contribute to a brighter and more equitable Cambodia!
