SOCHEAT – Chemical & Food Technology Engineering

Socheat came up through our urban pathway, and was one of the top performers in his year for the national high school exam. He gained entrance to the Institute of Technology in Phnom Penh to study Chemical & Food Technology Engineering – the first PLF student to major in this relatively new subject to Cambodia. He is now working as a production engineer for a soap manufacturer in Phnom Penh.

“The reason that I choose this major was I just love chemistry but I didn’t want to be a teacher. And I heard a bit about Food Technology and wondered that how chemistry relates to the food, how it process in our body, I heard much from many people said that some foods or vegetables and fruits which is sold in market contain chemical substance. So I just wonder what is it. But I could not find much information, just the name of the school in Phnom Penh. I was worried whether my decision right or not because there was not any seniors to talk to about this major and I didn’t know what would I prepare.
I challenged myself to move out of comfort zone for my major. I went to Phnom Penh where I hadn’t been before without much information, far from home, cook for myself and have to save money for studying during entrance exam preparation. When I studied in university it was completely different from high school. I clearly understood that my knowledge from high school is very very little. So I have to challenge myself to adapt with education program, especially in foreign languages English and French (𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴). I have to separate my time to study subject from school and learning French part time. When I was in year 3, I decided to work part time as an English teacher in a private school to get some money for living expense because I wanted to help my family too. I was busy with school work and work place but I could manage it.
Now my job help me a lot to grow in work life. For me it provides new experiences and I can use knowledge from school which was just the theory but now I can put it into practice. And of course, this job provides me the salary and I can help my family also. It is my first step in working life and I am looking for other opportunities to move my position to bigger company in the future.
I would like to give thank to PLF that supported and helped for my journey in university life. PLF always took care, giving advice, especially they make a monthly meeting with other students to share experiences and knowledge. I can’t imagine what it would be like if I didn’t get scholarships from PLF, I think I may not have abilities to study in Phnom Penh where I have to spend too much which my family could not provide and I cannot reach my goal.
I take part in PLF mentorship program because I like to give advice to young students who don’t know about major. Because I was the one who know nothing about my favorite major and I know that feeling clearly. I don’t want to see young students choose the major they don’t like and give up midway.
For me, education is transformation that changes me to a new person. Before I was scared and shy but with education and knowledge I feel more confident and help me with new journey which is work life and a good job.”

There are many more students just like Socheat, with great academic promise for higher education, but lacking the financial ability to get there.

Donating to our scholarship fund ensures they can access college, and go on to employment opportunities that change the trajectory of not only their lives, but their families’ and communities’ too.

Make their dreams come true – and contribute to a brighter and more equitable Cambodia!
