SAMOUN – Information Technology

SamOun came up through our project at Chey in rural Siem Reap, and was among the first students there to ever learn computers when we introduced these zany XO laptops way back in 2008. He took to the new technology so quickly, that within a year he was helping to teach his fellow students, and has not looked back since!

“I chose computer science as my university major because I love this subject. I thought it would be helpful in the future and I’m also curious about the technologies involved in our daily life.
Currently, I’m working as an IT Supervisor at the Westline Education Group. This job helps me grow in my career path, as well as gaining more knowledge outside of my career through the different trainings provided. And of course it helps me and my family financially. For my community, I have become an example to the younger generation in my village, as not many youth there successfully graduate from higher education. So, when they see me, they see how if we get out of our comfort zone we can have access to better opportunities in the future. Even though I came from a family who is struggling like them.
My goals in the future are to improve my career path even more and give back to my community as much as I can. I’ve been involved in a lot of activities with the PLF mentorship program where we get to share what we’ve learned and help guide the younger generation to the right path, setting a footprint for others to follow. My advice to the young students today is ‘be the one who can shine the light for others’.
PLF played such an important role when I was a student, and I got lots of support both physically and mentally to go through many difficulties. In particular, all the school supplies, tuition fees and all the courses that are provided by them are very helpful to sharpen my goals and future career. My first experience with computers came in middle school when PLF introduced XO tablets, and because me and my friends very quickly learned how to use them, I began to teach the other students. This is when my dream to work with computers first began!
Honestly, if there was no support from PLF, I’d probably be the same as many other youths in my community. Lack of education and not able to do as much as I wanted to do as I didn’t come from a wealthy background. Of course it was challenging at first to move to the city for university – managing daily expenses and living all by myself for the first time was very difficult, but after a while I could overcome it. Throughout these challenges, it made me stronger and able to live independently on my own. Especially, being who I am today comes from all the experiences and challenges in the past.

There are many more students just like SamOun with great academic promise for higher education, but lacking the financial ability to get there.

Donating to our scholarship fund ensures they can access college, and go on to employment opportunities that change the trajectory of not only their lives, but their families’ and communities’ too.

Make their dreams come true – and contribute to a brighter and more equitable Cambodia!
