Socheat – Field Director, Koh Ker, Romchek & Prey Kuol primaries, Preah Vihear
I started working for PLF in 2019. I was working as a government contract teacher at Koh Ker primary school for 4 years, but I wanted to change to work for PLF because I saw they helped a lot of students from poor families in rural areas to let them have a chance to continue their study and even get to university. This job means I can help them more, and PLF’s vision and long-term project means we contribute to developing knowledge to the younger generation, help them be better educated for their future life, and to become a human resource to develop the country and society.

In my role as Field Director, I coordinate between the primary schools at Koh Ker, Romchek and Prey Kuol; collect all the scores for the students; and control and observe all the activities from PLF’s programs like food, hygiene, uniform and supplies and others.
After they get support from PLF the biggest difference I see is that all these things help push them be able to stay in school and not quit, unlike from other student from poor families who struggle to continue their study. I see that PLF students have opportunity for a long-life education, clear goals, and strong commitment to succeed in the future.

It was hard for me to go to school, my parents were farmers and we lived far from the primary school. It was closer to cross by river than by road. And for secondary school it is even further away so I used to go by bicycle but the principal is so strict, that if we come a bit late he locked the school gate then we have to go just straight back home. To finish high school I had to move to Siem Reap town as there was no Grade 12 in my homeland, so I also worked a job in the city to support my living, and then make it possible to continue to university. But it was a lot of hard work.
Education means the sources of knowledge you got and experience you have. Education is very important and everything that happens on the planet is occurring from education, so when students have a higher education that means their thinking and mindset are higher than other students. They will get a better job, get a salary for their future life because of education.

For as little as $10 a month, you could contribute to the ongoing education of our students. $120 goes a long way in Cambodia: that’s 5 village children on the road to education, with access to school and clean drinking water for half a year. Or a million other things, all of which coalesce into the tools needed for life to change for the better!
