Volunteer Placements

Here’s a list of our current classroom needs for volunteers interested in a 2-4 week placement.

ARTS & CRAFTS

The government Khmer curriculum is taught nearly entirely by rote, so our Arts & Crafts program is a crucial part of keeping our students engaged and continuing to explore. Arts & Crafts activities stimulate children’s minds, inspire creativity, build critical thinking and make school fun. We’re looking for you to think outside the box and encourage our students to do the same. Design puppets and put on a puppet show, challenge our students with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) related crafts, paint self portraits or big murals, organize a scavenger hunt – you name it. Please note, Arts & Crafts is currently offered for our Grade 4 students, who have not yet begun learning English. Thankfully the best kinds of activities are not reliant on language, and you’ll have a Cambodian teacher with you at all times to help translate instructions. We can’t wait to hear your new ideas!

Placement Duration: 2-3 weeks

ENGLISH ENRICHMENT

We require all English teaching volunteers to have a native English speaking ability and to have already had some classroom teaching experience. Volunteers will work from the current lesson plans to co-teach, review, and help lead both the students and the local teacher away from rote learning, which is customary in Cambodia. We’d like our teachers to learn how to provide a higher level of engagement with their students in the classroom; encouraging students to be more interactive, checking for understanding, and utilizing games and activities to keep the material interesting and the class lively.

Placement Duration: 2-4 weeks

Robotic Lego VolunteerROBOTIC LEGOS

We have a pilot robotic legos class also running at Tchey School and could really use some help with moving the students forward. Did you have this training when you were in school? Or are you the sort of person with a strong engineering aptitude? For those of you who know about Lego WeDo, perhaps you can help! Please let us know if you know anything about robotic legos!

Placement Duration: 2-4 weeks

SPELLING BEE

Get involved with our English program by helping us host  a spelling bee competition between Tchey and Knar school students. Work with our English teachers to build a list of new and familiar words, spend a week or two at each school to teach, review, and practice spelling aloud with the students, and let the games begin at a final competition on the weekend! Our students and teachers have loved spelling competitions in the past, and we’d love to see more opportunities to bring our students together and build their confidence with English skills.

Placement Duration: 3-4 weeks

DANCE

Dance programs rarely exist in Cambodian schools, so the opportunity for our students to get their groove on is an extremely unique opportunity. We’re looking for volunteers who are interested in teaching relatively simple and appropriate dance routines to a small group of students, likely outside on the school grounds.

Placement Duration: 2-3 weeks

We currently have 40 students learning at a beginner level that would love to jam out and learn simple songs from different cultures.  We even have some shakers, maracas, and recorder flutes to help you build a full band!

volunteer bicycle clinicBICYCLE CLINICS

Many of our students, especially our secondary and high school students, rely on bicycles to commute to and from school on a daily basis. Help make that commute a smoother and safer ride by leading a bicycle clinic work with the students to repair their bicycles!

Please note that spare parts necessary to successfully run Bicycle Clinics are usually in the $500-600 range, so please be prepared to commit to sponsoring these costs.

Placement Duration: 2-3 weeks

Volunteer PhotographyPHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOGRAPHY

We are always looking for skilled photographers and videographers to assist us with keeping our media collateral refreshed and up to date. Short feature films and snapshots of our programs, our students, and our projects provide a critical tool for us to share the story of PLF with the community. We’ve got a list of areas in need of more media coverage, and this position would put you right out in the field to help us capture a day in the life of PLF.

Placement Duration: 2-4 weeks
