PLF, along with the huge and varied support we get from our donors, volunteers and supporters, is very lucky to be able to boast many success stories in its 9 years of life.  The wellness program at Knar is one of those success stories and one which is now being shared to Koh Ker school.

PLF Board member Barbara Shooter,  has been coming two or three times every year since 2010 to provide on-the-ground support with PLF.  The photos above are how things looked back at the start in regards to introducing hygiene practices to Knar Primary school – things have advanced a lot!

A purpose built wash station now exists where once a patch of dirt behind a classroom was used. Now heading to the wash station to wash hands and get wounds checked is a daily routine.

There is also a local teacher, Chenda who has overtime developed into a proactive school nurse administering basic first aid or alternately advising parents when their child needs to go to hospital, in more serious cases.

Another success has been Barbara’s advocacy for clean teeth.  Something not usually performed at home, the cleaning of teeth is now being done on a daily basis across the whole school.  Barbara’s successful plan was to start with the older kids and the younger ones have happily followed in their big brother and sisters foot steps.  They too were keen to have their own personally named plastic mug containing their own brightly coloured brush and toothpaste.

Barbara will happily tell you this successful program didn’t happen over night, there was quite a lot of revisiting “how” and “why” at the school each year she returned.   But her trip this year has been about taking the lessons learnt and applying the successful program at Koh Ker school.
