PLF Student Documentary to Debut at International Film Festival

The PLF student media team is set to premiere their latest documentary, “Sunflowers of Srayang” at an international film festival in the first days of February.

The student team has been working months to write, shoot, and edit “Sunflowers of Srayang” which chronicles Cambodian girls’ struggle to obtain an education in one rural village.  The team, led by PLF’s Sokha Khoun and Diana Gross, spent a week at PLF’s Srayang Dormitory in Preah Vihear Province in November 2012.  During that time, the students used the technology and journalism skills they’ve learned to capture the often heart-breaking and triumphant stories of our girl students at the dorm.

The work is set to be spotlighted at the Angkor Wat International Film Festival February 1 through 3 in Siem Reap.  In an effort to build community support for the student media team and for the festival, Khoun has been visiting the students’ parents in the village to encourage them to come into the city and attend the event.

Already the student media team won $10,000 in an international competition for their documentary, “I Am One”, a project launched during Gross’s previous work with PLF in April 2012.
